Just Plum Fun

I've been having a lot of fun with plums lately.

The tree in our yard has a lot of them.  A.  Lot.  And Lilo says that they're "almost finished" by which I'm pretty sure she means "hurry up and grab them and use them before they get to squishy."

So I've been playing around with my food photography.  They're just such a pretty fruit.

And toying with the idea of canning.  But I was feeling lazy and didn't want to go get new lids for my jars, so I just Made up some sauce real quick and threw it in jars to freeze.  (I tried to show you how big the bowl was with the bananas for scale ;o)  That's my biggest bowl in the kitchen!)

Plums.  A little bit of water.  A bit of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.  Stick blender.  Boom.

We ate it on our waffles.  Which Jesse was a big fan of.

Which made him go out to the tree for another batch of plums.

Which made me make him go with me to Globus for some jars to can with, as we are now out of freezer space :o)

So now I'm going to go on my first canning adventure.  I'm just going to do a simple jam.  Wish me luck!

The instructions that came with the jars are in German, so wish me lots of luck!  (Can anyone say "google translate"?)

  1. they are a beautiful fruit and look quite yummy. you might try to google "ball fruit canning for eng. directions...Ball is THE name in canning how-to since, um....i don't know exactly but they were doin their thin when i was a young'un!

  2. Good Luck! Let me know if you have any ?'s! And let me know how it goes!!! Happy Canning!

  3. Jen, you most definitely should take some. A bunch. We'll see how the actually "canning" goes, though I'm pleased to hear them "popping" as we speak. But you can at least have some of the frozen sauce.

  4. I was over at a friends house canning plums just this week! Lovely pictures, and waffles with plum sauce sounds soooo good!

  5. I made plum jam too!! I like it better than my peach jam...but that's because I used sugar in the plum jam. HA! How did you make yours? Using the same plum sauce recipe? - Cassie

  6. Um... I don't think I really made "jam" lol. It was supposed to be, but it turned out to be just pureed plums... so a bit soupy, still. I'm learning, though! Next year I'll find a tried-and-true recipe. BUT I will say that the jars all sealed/canned properly! So they're safe to store in the basement!
