Look at these two, getting all big and grown-up on me! Sam... standing up at the chalkboard and getting another tooth. Sorry to disappoint, no walking, yet! But at least she will have another tooth to fill out that gummy grin soon!
And Lily, telling me "I DO" (I want to do it myself Momma) all the time. Awesome! Or not, depending on the situation she wants to "I DO".
But seriously, I don't really know what to do about the chalkboard. With Lily, it used to sit relatively ignored in the corner. But now that Sam's interested and knows she can reach it, I'm in trouble! I feel like every time I turn my back I've got Sam putting the chalk in her mouth and Lily finger painting with chalk on the new couch.
I know, chill out Jessica, chalk washes off. But still. IT'S EVERYWHERE! Should I just not worry about it? Keep a closer eye and teach them to leave it at the board? Put it away till Sam can handle the pressure? What? WHAT?
You could try operating like gun safety... always store the gun and ammunition separately. Keep the ammo out of reach.

I'm already there sis! But I feel like a control freak (oh, wait, that's what I'm being!) by keeping it out of reach. I mean, Hilary currently has a craft table set up in her house with paint for her toddlers to play with at will! But still I think you're right... for now the chalk stays put away until Momma has a few minutes to supervise. And then hopefully in the future we can all learn not to eat the chalk or spread it all over the house. Then we can store the ammo with the gun ;o) (PS you make me laugh and I miss you!)

c) hiding it will contain the chalk dust, too and you could even clean it up right after the play time to avoid it going to the couch! (but I wonder where you got that crazy control-freak tendency!?!)(your MOM's a control freak)!

DeleteChalk is non-toxic. It's just calcium carbonate. We use sidewalk chalk with our chalkboard. It's big enough that if Lu snacks a little on it then it won't impact the chalk stash too much. We don't keep the board out all the time, but if it's out then the chalk is with it because they won't ever learn if they don't have access, right?
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing Hil! (Sidewalk chalk) I just thought it seemed easier for Lily to hold at the time. Both of them can use it easily now.
