Orange and Ginger Grilled Asparagus

I think I was drawn to this recipe on Pinterest because of the colors involved.  Green and orange look so pretty together that they HAVE to be a win, right?

Recipe from Big Green Egg:

Clean your asparagus and snap off the hard white end. Marinate them in this marinade for an hour:

1/4 cup orange juice
1 Tbsp ginger, fresh grated
1 Tbsp mustard, coarse ground
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tsp pepper
2 Tbsp olive oil

Then lay two soaked bbq skewers down, top with asparagus and slices of an orange. Top with two more skewers. Secure both ends with kitchen twine and cover with foil.  Grill 5-10 minutes per side, direct heat.

Now, I have to say the recipe gets 5 stars for being pretty to look at.  But only 3 stars for flavor (we couldn't really taste the orange... mostly the ginger) and it definitely only gets 1 star for ease and functionality.  On second thought, maybe it gets a -1 star for functionality.

So I'm basically sharing the recipe with you just because the pictures are pretty ;o)  Not because I think you should rush off to try it this weekend.  I mean, you can if you want.... but this sucker was SO HARD TO FLIP without dumping asparagus and orange into the grill!  As you can see, this is a picture of it post-flip and the whole thing is looking a little sad!

Also looking sad: the winter shovel standing next to the grill.  And the huge weed in the corner.  Like I said, I sure do wish I had more time for weeding.  But I don't really have an excuse not to put that shovel away now.  I don't *think* we're going to need it any time soon ;o)

Do you like how I use the steps to spread out my grilling gear?

So there you go: Pretty but not-so-easy-to-grill Orange and Ginger Asparagus.  Try if you dare, but I warned you!

Three cheers for trying new recipes!  They can't all be winners ;o)

  1. The colors really are great! It does sound yummy so I'm sure it was disappointing. Maybe less ginger, more orange and a longer marinate time- if you ever wanted to try it again.

I want to get better with trying new recipes. Have to find the energy first!!!

    1. Don't you feel like veggies (specifically asparagus) don't marinate all that well? I mean, meat does great. But asparagus? I'm kind of a doubter. Especially after this colorful and annoying but pretty experiment ;o)

    2. I actually haven't really cooked asparagus. Maybe if you made cuts in the stalk before marinating. But at that point its probably not worth all the effort! I wonder how that marinate would work on chicken?
