Homemade Pedialyte

LJ seems to be feeling a *little* better, but she was still a little loosey-goosey in the diaper department this morning. And she was running a low-grade temp last night. Mom and I were discussing buying her some Pedialyte. But you know me, I'd always prefer to make things myself so that I am sure of what all the ingredients are...especially when it comes to what I feed the girls. So when I remembered I have a recipe for a homemade electrolyte replenishment I got all excited! :o) The recipe is from a family friend, but I substituted raw honey for the refined sugar.

Here's the recipe if you're interested in giving it a try:

Homemade Pedialyte
Juice from half an orange
Juice from half a lemon
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 pint boiling water (16 fluid ounces)
2 Tablespoons sugar (or honey - preferably raw, unfiltered)

Mix all the ingredients into the boiling water. Serve warm (like a tea) or cold (like juice). If using raw honey, wait till it's room temperature or you'll kill the helpful enzymes and antibacterial goodies you want to help your body!

I haven't *actually* served this to LJ yet cause she's still napping. So stay tuned on how palatable it is! :o)

  1. A no-fail treatment for diarrhea is the BRAT diet. That's best for solidifying what's watery. Is she not drinking water or not eating? I hope she feels better!

  2. Homemade pedialyte sounds rather grim, but the recipe actually sounds good. Hope you're having a Merry Christmas!

  4. She seems to be feeling better, but still having gross poops :o) BRAT diet was all we gave her for a few days...but we're moving on to more normal food because I'm starting to wonder if it's a teething problem (four side molars coming in).

  5. Update: LJ would not drink the stuff, so I slipped it into yummy things like applesauce and stuff. Mmm, applesauce-pedialyte-soup... gotta do what you gotta do, right? ;o)

  6. Went to a birthday party where the birthday boy was sick, so I made a batch in preparation. And of course, we all got sick! I was barely keeping water down, so I only had a sip or 2 and the hubby was definitely not keeping water down, so he didn't even try. But I gave it to SM and he LOVED it! He kept asking for more juice and I think it mended him quicker, because he was feeling better by early afternoon after being sick the night prior.

So, on a side note, since my kiddo loved it so much what are your thoughts about serving it as juice instead of the other super sugary store-bought stuff? It's definitely much healthier and he likes it!

    1. Well in my opinion fresh "juice" is definitely a step up from conventional juice. But I try to avoid juice for the girls... our bodies aren't meant to consume so much fruit juice (aka sugar) without the fiber of the fruit itself. I'd rather they just drink water and eat fruit. But that's just me. Glad the "pedialyte" worked for him!
