You Know You're a Hippie When...

...You and your husband start brushing your teeth with baking soda.  And salt and peppermint oil.  This is actually the first crunchy thing that Jesse has gotten started!  *clap clap clap*  Look, I suckered him into the hippie-club! :o)

He just randomly came home one day and asked me for the baking soda.  To brush his teeth?  I was pretty shocked... because I had read about this method of brushing your teeth (all the rage with other hippies) but I'd written it off as something J would never go for.  Surprise surprise!  Someone told him about it at work I guess.

All we do is equal parts baking soda, salt, and a few drops of peppermint oil.  This stuff is supposed to be great at cleaning, deodorizing, and germ killing.  And it's cheap.  And it tastes really salty... as I'm sure you would have guessed.  But I didn't want you to be caught unawares in case you want to try it!  We still have our conventional toothpaste around for the times we just want that good old minty feel.  But the "tooth powder" really does make my mouth feel clean!  Go figure!

...You run out of dishwasher detergent and you make a batch of your own.  Since we don't use the dishwasher all that much I finally used up the box of detergent (from Winn Dixie in MS!) we had.  And then I decided to use this recipe I'd seen online for your very own less-toxic, and cheaper detergent.

Equal parts baking soda and borax.   Add two tablespoons per load and use two tablespoons vinegar as a rinsing agent.  I skipped the vinegar cause my German dishwasher is confusing and I don't know where to put it.  But with just the baking soda and borax, the dishes came out just as clean as with the store-bought stuff.  Ta-da!

...Your daughter asks for "coke" for her face.  What she means is coconut oil for her dry skin.  She says sentences like "Coke Face Dry".  Jesse actually calls the girls "popcorn face" because we also use the coconut oil to make stove top popcorn.  So the smell reminds him of movie nights ;o)  Coconut oil... a million uses!

  1. ahem. CO has another great use...perhaps for after movie night...

ANYWAY! I put peppermint flavored castile soap, peppermint extract, BS, and CO in my toothpaste. my mom adds stevia and says it is nice. ever heard of oil pulling? now THAT is super weird.

  2. ahem. I know exactly what you mean ;o)

I hate castile soap. I tried... I really did! But when I used it to wash dishes it left residue. And I never felt like it cleaned the girls hair really well for a shampoo. But yeah I have heard of oil pulling and I just. can't. No way!

  3. Dude! Never thought of the ahem! Might need to add a new use to my CO repertoire!

Thanks for the dishwasher detergent recipe! I actually went looking for one on my own and found that exact recipe. :) I used it once so far...seemed to clean the dishes.

Way to go with the toothpaste victory! Haha, I tried to get Adam to try my homemade vicks...he refused. Maybe someday... :)

    1. Good I'm glad you found it! Seems to work good for me, too. Do you use the vinegar rinse agent? Yeah sometimes with stuff I try Jesse just looks at me cross-eyed ;o) We can't get 'em on board with everything!

    2. I haven't used the vinegar yet...I had a little chemical rinse agent (haha) left over in the trap and didn't want to mix...as soon as I'm sure it's empty I'll give it a go.
